Disconnect

about

"Disconnect" is an ambient electronic composition created with one instrument: Moog's Mother-32 semi-modular analog synthesizer. It was birthed as a symbiotic one-take improvisation on the exploration of emotion and sound.

COMPOSER STATEMENT:

I wanted to push the Mother-32's single VCO where I hadn't taken it before. By using some of its on board patching options I was able to input a simple melody into the sequencer which, through random voltage assignable output, kept taking me places I never would've thought of going. It became a thing where, for over 20 minutes, I was letting the Mother-32 inform me of the sounds it wanted us to explore. It was not hard to let go and follow, and it ended up allowing me to discover a love for ambient/experimental music I didn't know I had been missing.

In retrospect, the composition ended up accurately representing my emotional state with regards to the current policial climate. There are a lot of things I'm angry about, which is palpable in the music. There's a darkness to it that, while most of the time I keep contained, I was able to release in this piece. However, the truth is that I usually keep quiet and to myself most of the time, which is why there are also moments of reflection and disconnect.

This is where the title of the composition comes from. It's the daily battle against the chaotic negativity we're continuously bombarded with; my ongoing struggle to engage, or to disconnect.
